Weight Management

Medically supervised weight management for people who have tried everything and been told to eat less.

It is not willpower

Most people arrive here having lost the same two stone several times over.

They have done the calorie counting, the fasting, the plan a friend swore by, and the thing that worked in their twenties and does not work now. Each time it came back, and each time the explanation offered was that they had not stuck to it properly.

Sometimes that is the whole story. Frequently it is not.

Thyroid problems, insulin resistance, PMOS, perimenopause and the medication someone was put on years ago all make weight harder to lose, and none of them respond to being told to try harder. The first thing that happens here is that those possibilities get investigated rather than assumed away.

This is a medical service, not a prescription service. What you are paying for is assessment, supervision and the support to make a change that holds.

Who This Is For

Who this is for
  • People whose weight has changed in midlife and no longer responds to what used to work
  • Women in perimenopause and menopause, where hormonal change alters where weight sits and how easily it shifts
  • Anyone with PMOS, previously known as PCOS, or insulin resistance
  • People who have lost weight repeatedly and regained it
  • Anyone who would rather be supervised by a doctor than by an app
  • People who want to know why, and not just what to do
Whether treatment is an option for you

Where medical treatment is being considered, there are criteria, and they are set by the licence rather than by preference.

  • You must be 18 or over
  • A BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to 29.9 where there is also a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, raised blood sugar, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, cardiovascular disease or sleep apnoea
  • For people of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African Caribbean family background, those thresholds are lower, because the same health risks appear at a lower BMI

Your height and weight are measured at the clinic rather than taken on trust. That is not a matter of suspicion. Prescribing decisions rest on those figures, so they have to be accurate, and it is the same standard applied to everyone.

If you do not meet the criteria, Dr Hazel will tell you so plainly and will not prescribe anyway. She will also tell you if you might be eligible for treatment on the NHS, because for some people that is the better route and it costs nothing to say so.

When this is not the right service

There are situations where weight management treatment is not offered here, and it is better to know before booking:

  • Pregnancy, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • A current or previous eating disorder, unless a specialist has confirmed that treatment is appropriate
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Already taking a treatment of the same class
  • Anyone under 18

Some conditions need individual assessment rather than a straight yes or no, including previous pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, significant kidney or liver problems, and some mental health conditions. These are discussed at your consultation.

This service also does not provide bariatric surgery, specialist tier 3 or tier 4 weight management, or treatment for eating disorders.

Eating disorders

Every patient is asked about their relationship with food and eating as part of the assessment. This is done for everyone, it is not a judgement about you, and it is one of the more important parts of the appointment.

Where an eating disorder is present or suspected, treatment is not prescribed. Dr Hazel will explain why, and will help you find the right support, which is a different and more useful thing than a prescription.

If you are struggling with food or eating and want support now, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline can help.

What Happens

What happens

Your first consultation

In person at the clinic, and at least 45 minutes.

A full assessment. Your weight history, what you have tried, what happened, your medical history, family history, medication and how you actually live. Height, weight, BMI, waist measurement and blood pressure, all measured rather than reported. A full body composition scan. Dr Hazel will also arrange blood tests where they are needed, which is most of the time, because thyroid function, blood sugar, insulin resistance and hormonal causes are worth ruling in or out before starting anything.

You will also be asked about your eating patterns, your mental health and your expectations, because all three matter to whether this works and whether it is safe.

Your plan

Built around what the assessment actually found. It will always include nutrition and lifestyle, because nothing else works without them. Where medical treatment is clinically appropriate and you are suitable for it, that is discussed fully, including what it does, what it does not do, the side effects and what happens when you stop.

You will be given a realistic picture of what to expect. Around half a kilo to a kilo a week is a safe and sustainable rate. Anything faster is usually costing you muscle, which is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve.

If there is any chance you could become pregnant, effective contraception is required throughout treatment and for a period afterwards. This is explained fully before anything is started.

Ongoing review

Reviews are frequent at the start and settle down once things are stable. The pattern is broadly this:

  • Two to four weeks after starting, to check how you are tolerating things
  • Every four weeks while the dose is being adjusted
  • At three months, for a proper look at progress, weight, BMI, waist and blood pressure
  • At six months, a full review of whether this is working and whether to continue
  • At least every six months after that

Reviews can be in person or by video, or a mixture, whichever fits around your life. The body composition scan can only be done in person, so it is worth coming in for some of them. Many patients do video for the short check-ins and come to the clinic for the three and six month reviews.

One thing to be clear about. No further prescription is issued without a review. That is not an administrative rule, it is how treatment is kept safe, and it applies to everyone.

Why the nutrition part is not optional

Losing weight quickly without proper nutritional support costs you muscle as well as fat.

That matters at any age and it matters a great deal in midlife, when muscle mass is already falling and bone density is changing. Losing muscle slows your metabolism, which makes the weight easier to regain and harder to lose the next time. It also affects strength, balance and long-term health in ways that show up years later.

Protecting muscle and bone while you lose fat takes adequate protein, resistance exercise and proper monitoring. It is built into the plan from the first appointment rather than added at the end, and it is a large part of why this service costs more than an online prescriber.

Measuring it, rather than hoping

Every review includes a full body composition scan.

The scales tell you that you have lost four kilos. They do not tell you whether those four kilos were fat or muscle, and that is the difference between a change that lasts and one that quietly sets you up to regain it.

The scan separates them. At every appointment you will see your fat mass and your muscle mass tracked individually, along with visceral fat, which is the fat stored around the organs and the type most strongly linked to metabolic risk. It also breaks the results down limb by limb, so muscle loss in the legs, which is both common and consequential, shows up early rather than years later.

This is what turns protecting your muscle from a good intention into something we can actually watch. If the balance starts going the wrong way, we see it and change the plan, rather than finding out at the end.

The scan is included in your monthly programme fee. There is no separate charge for it.

What weight loss does to your face

Nobody warns you about this one, and it catches a lot of women out.

Losing weight quickly takes fat from your face as well as everywhere else, and the face is where you notice it. Cheeks flatten, the area under the eyes hollows, skin around the jaw and neck loses its support and starts to look loose. In midlife it is more pronounced again, because collagen is already falling and skin has less capacity to shrink back to fit.

This is not caused by any particular treatment. It happens with rapid weight loss however it is achieved, and it is largely a matter of how fast the weight comes off and how much there was to lose.

A good deal of it can be prevented. Losing weight at a sensible rate rather than the fastest possible one, eating enough protein and maintaining muscle all help, and those are already part of the plan here for other reasons.

Where the change has happened and it bothers you, there is a great deal that can be done about it, and it does not need to be filler. Collagen stimulating treatments such as Sculptra rebuild support over several months rather than simply adding volume. Polynucleotides, skin boosters and radiofrequency microneedling improve skin quality and firmness. Dermal fillers restore structure where it has genuinely been lost. Medical-grade skincare underpins all of it.

Dr Hazel runs the aesthetics side of this clinic as well, so if this is something you want addressed it can be discussed at a review rather than becoming somebody else’s referral. Equally, if it does not bother you, nobody is going to raise it.

Why Patients Choose Dr Hazel

A doctor, throughout.

Not a questionnaire and a delivery. The same GP assesses you, prescribes where appropriate, reviews you and adjusts the plan.

The causes get investigated.

Thyroid, blood sugar, insulin resistance, PMOS and perimenopause are looked into rather than assumed away. Sometimes the answer changes the whole plan.

Hormones are part of the picture.

Dr Hazel runs a menopause and women's health service alongside this one. Where midlife weight change is hormonal, it can be treated as such rather than referred elsewhere.

Muscle and bone are protected.

Nutritional guidance from a doctor is part of the programme, not an optional extra, for the reasons above.

Progress is measured, not guessed.

Every review includes a full body composition scan, so you can see whether the weight you are losing is fat or muscle instead of trusting that it is going well.

The face is not an afterthought.

Rapid weight loss changes how your face looks, and it is the change women most often say nobody warned them about. Dr Hazel runs the aesthetics side of this clinic too, so it can be anticipated, discussed and treated here rather than becoming a separate problem to take somewhere else.

CQC registered.

Weight management here is a regulated clinical service, inspected and accountable.

She trains herself.

Dr Hazel exercises regularly and has a long-standing background in resistance training. She competes in natural, drug-tested bodybuilding, and works with a coach of her own.

That is not a medical qualification and is not offered as one. What it means in practice is that the advice you get about protecting muscle, eating enough protein and training sensibly while losing fat comes from someone who does it herself.

Book a Consultation

Your first appointment is at the clinic in Long Itchington, Warwickshire. It has to be in person, because height, weight, waist and blood pressure need measuring properly and the body composition scan is done then. Reviews afterwards can be in person, by video, or a mixture.

The first consultation is £50 and is redeemable against your treatment. It is a proper assessment rather than a sales conversation, and you are welcome to go away and think about it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be given medication?

Not automatically, and not for everyone.

Whether medical treatment is appropriate depends on your assessment, your medical history and whether you are suitable for it. Some people are, some are not, and some turn out to have an underlying cause that needs treating first. That is worked out at your consultation and discussed with you properly, including the risks and what happens when treatment stops.

If treatment is not right for you, you will be told so plainly rather than sold something anyway.

Because it is a different thing.

An online service checks whether you are eligible and sends you a product. What you are paying for here is a doctor assessing why your weight has not shifted, investigating the causes, monitoring you while you lose weight, making sure you keep your muscle and bone while you do it, and adjusting the plan when it needs adjusting.

The weight is the easy part. Losing it safely, and keeping it off, is the part that needs supervision.

It may not be, and Dr Hazel will say so if she thinks that.

What is usually different is the starting point. Most people have never had the underlying causes investigated, so they have been treating the symptom without knowing what is driving it. Finding a thyroid problem or insulin resistance does not make weight loss effortless, but it does explain a lot and it changes what actually works.

The other difference is what gets measured. Most diets and most weight loss services track one number, which is what the scales say. That number cannot tell you whether the weight coming off is fat or muscle, and if you have lost and regained weight several times there is a reasonable chance some of what you lost previously was muscle. That makes each attempt harder than the last, because less muscle means a slower metabolism.

Here, every review includes a body composition scan. The aim is not simply to lose weight. It is to lose fat while holding on to your muscle, and you will see both numbers tracked separately so you can tell which is actually happening. If the balance starts going the wrong way, the plan changes.

Yes, and for many women the two belong together. Weight change in perimenopause is frequently hormonal, and treating the hormones and the weight as separate problems tends to mean neither gets properly sorted.

Menopause & Women’s Health

Yes, but the number on the scales is the least interesting thing we look at.

Every review includes a body composition scan, which shows your fat mass and muscle mass separately. Weight can stay the same while your body composition improves considerably, and it is entirely possible to lose weight in a way that is doing you no favours at all. The scan is what tells the difference, and it is a great deal more encouraging than a number that refuses to move.

Often at first, then less as things settle.

A check two to four weeks after starting, then roughly every four weeks while the dose is being adjusted, a full review at three months and again at six months, and at least every six months once you are stable. More often if anything needs sorting out.

No prescription is issued without a review, so attending them is part of the arrangement rather than optional.

With your consent, yes, and it is included in your fee. It matters here more than in most services, because your GP needs to know what you are taking and what is being monitored.

An honest answer: for most people, weight comes back unless something has changed besides the treatment.

That is exactly why nutrition, activity and the habits around them are built into the programme from the start rather than bolted on at the end. The aim is that you finish the programme with something that holds, not just with a lower number.
